Build a strong foundation

All dreams, hopes and goals are achieved with a strong foundation.

Colchester Castle is built on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius

Colchester Castle is noted for having the largest Norman keep in Europe.  The castle is built on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, which is the reason for its size.

The 2000-year-old Temple of Claudius is long gone, but the foundations remain.  Upon those foundations has existed this 1000-year-old castle, which has seen use as castle, jail and now town museum.  Most likely this castle and its foundations will outlast all the modern buildings that now exist in Colchester.

Every dream, hope and goal requires a strong foundation like the above castle to exist, or it crumbles, worse, it never manifests.  If you wish to run a business, the foundation may be good financing, a plan, passion, sweat and a useful product or service.

If you take a certain action, is that action founded on the practical wisdom that it will manifest that goal? Lets say you wish to run a marathon race in a certain time, starting the marathon with a mile sprint will highly likely result in failure of the goal due to the way the human body works.  A good foundation for achieving a marathon in a certain time is a six month training plan, which builds the foundation by preparing the body for the task of meeting the goal; backed by a good running strategy during the race.

There are no magic pills in life, a strong foundation requires considerable intelligent work, which then creates the potential to achieve dreams, hopes and goals.

  1. [ Smiles ] I LOVE the message, Alex. Brilliant!

  2. There’s a fortress and then there’s this Castle. Definition of Solid. Great post Alex.

    • True, if there was a nuke attack on Colchester then the vaults of this castle is the safest place to be.

  3. Was there something in existence before the Temple of Claudius? Some other pagan site for instance?

    • It is likely there was, probably dedicated to Bran, Belenius, Celtic-Mercury or Camulos. It would be logical for the Romans to mark their conquest of Britain by putting their temple over an important Celtic temple. The area where the Temple was allocated was marked off as a special area when the Romans started building their “city”.

  7. These old buildings are not just strong, they are heavily over engineered, much stronger than they need to be. I sometimes wonder what else all that effort could have been put to. But they have been an important source of building materials and been put to many other uses over time by suceeding generations. Many have become the most ornate quarries of all time, especially courtesy of Mr Cromwell. ….

    • Castles like these are military, so they were over-engineered for maximum strength, which meant they will withstand time too.

The former Temple of Claudius was quarried to make the castle, and the castle was heavily quarried too for the more modern buildings in the town. Colchester suffers lack of natural rock so it is amazing anything survived.
